Artist’s Bio

Hsi Cheng is a writer/ director/ producer, currently based in NYC.

Growing up in Taiwan, Hsi was influenced by different culture, and that source of influence was the small Blockbuster next to her childhood house. That field trip like excitement she feels every time walking down those aisles never dies, and it followed her all the way to New York where she started to make her own films.

Her current project "I Heard a Fly Buzz" (10mins) is a horror romance short film inspired by a poem by Emily Dickinson, about unrequited love and letting go of regrets. Her original script for is film won first place at the Annual School of Visual Arts writing program contest, and will be published in the Match Factory Magazine in 2023.

Her other upcoming project “The Lost Daughter” is a feature length documentary about the Julie Chu human trafficking case in 1980s Taiwan.

Hsi wrote and directed "The Balloons" (10mins) in 2022, a drama about grief and friendship. It was selected to screen at the SVA's 2022 student film festival, and is scheduled to release in summer 2023.

Her film "What's Wrong With Eliza" (10mins) is a drama short about a sugar baby's encounter with a client who was not who she thought he was. It is currently under post production.

Her Sci-fi TV pilot, A Ship Leans on The Beach (20 pages) was awarded in VII Youth Film Festival Golden Frame, and LA Under the Stars Film Festival. “Bad Faith” (4 mins), her experimental short, was selected in Progeny Short Film Festival and Lift-Off Filmmaker Sessions. She also made a stop motion animation, “ALAN” (3mins) in 2020, and produced three thesis film for students at SVA from 2022 to 2023.

In 2021, Hsi was the social media coordinator/ designer at GQ Magazine Taiwan. BFA Film School of Visual Arts, 2024.
